Warner Bros is closing in on the announcement of who will star in The Green Lantern and the three choices are strange ones. The Hollywood Reporter says it's between Bradley Cooper (who has been rumored for the role for months), Ryan Reynolds (who is already lined up for his own superhero movie as Deadpool), and Justin Timberlake.

Green Lantern moved to Summer 2011

DC Comics' The Green Lantern won't be lighting up anyones Christmas Trees next year, as the film has now been pushed back to the Summer of 2011.

The move comes as no surprise, as no production has even taken place at this late hour. And while various names have been attached to the film in recent months, as yet the lead role still remains vacant.

Amongst the names rumoured have been Chris Pine of recent "Star Trek" fame and Ryan Gosling who has reportedly turned down the role several times.

This week another name has been added to the list, that of American television/film actor Bradley Cooper ("The Hangover", "Wedding Crashers").

Martin Campbell in Talks to Direct The Green Lantern

Martin Campbell is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of the DC comic book series The Green Lantern according to Variety. Campbell is probably best known as the director of James Bond films Casino Royale and GoldenEye, but his filmography also includes The Mask of Zorro/Legend of Zorro, Vertical Limit, and the upcoming Mel Gibson film Edge of Darkness. The screenplay was penned by Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Eli Stone), Marc Guggenheim (Law & Order, Eli Stone) and Michael Green (Smallville, Heroes).

Berlanti was at one point attached to helm the project, but is now attached to an adaptation of Jonathan Tropper’s upcoming novel This Is Where I Leave You.

Marc Guggenheim Talks Green Lantern

Marc Guggenheim, the writer of Warner Bros’ upcoming “Green Lantern” movie and veteran writer of comics and TV shows such as the Marvel title “Young X-Men”, and the shows “The Practice” and “Law & Order”, recently talked to MTV’s Splashpage about the emerald space cops and his vision of the world of the Green Lantern Corps. He mentions that some slight changes have been made to the script since his last draft, which documents Hal Jordan, a test pilot, being the latest recruit into the intergalactic police force who are known as Green Lanterns, wielding rings that give them incredible power that is fueled by their willpower and courage.

“[The changes are] nothing that’s affecting the storyline, really, [...] It’s pretty well set. But sometimes we’ll move a scene to a different location for budget purposes, perhaps in an already established location instead of a new one. It’s a question of, which locations can we live without? It’s a constant process to streamline what you’re going through, even after the film is shot, when you’re cutting things in the edit. That’s what the rewrite process is like, how you sand down the roughness of [the movie] to its smoothest.”

It’s rumored that “Green Lantern” will include a Clark Kent/Superman cameo, as well as cameos of the characters Alan Scott and Guy Gardner (another Earth-based Green Lantern). While Guggenheim won’t confirm or deny the rumors and says to be cautious of too many such “Easter Eggs” in films he is a fan, pointing to the recent Robert Downey Jr. cameo as Tony Stark/Iron Man in this past summer’s “The Incredible Hulk” as his favorite.

Green Lantern is a DC Comics character, a name used by several characters through the years. The first, Alan Scott, appeared in 1940 in “All-Star Comics”, though the character of Hal Jordan, arguably the best-known to use the name and the first to introduce the concept of the Green Lantern Corps itself, first appeared in 1959 in DC’s “Showcase” title. The characters use their power rings for various abilities including flight, energy constructs that can form anything they can imagine, and space travel. Their names come from the power source of their rings, a battery in the shape of an old-fashioned metal lantern.

Warner Bros. has a tentative release date of 2010 for the “Green Lantern” movie, and it will be produced by De Line Pictures, and Greg Berlanti is directing.

'Green Lantern' Rumors Addressed

While promoting his ABC television show "Eli Stone", screenwriter Marc Guggenheim sets the stone straight on the rumors flying around the forthcoming comic book adaptation "Green Lantern", including the one which suggested that Ryan Gosling is eyed for the titular role. About the latter issue, he confesses to Newsarama, "I read that online, actually."

Though noting that he has no idea on Gosling's rumored part, he is excited of the possibility stating further, "That was how I got that news. As one of the writers, I'm not really involved in the day-to-day pre-production on it all. But I think it would be pretty amazing. I'll go on record saying that."

Ryan Gosling Eyed for 'Green Lantern' Role

Ryan Gosling may shed his image as independent movie star as he is considered to portray the pivotal role in "Green Lantern". Latino Review has uncovered that the 27-year-old actor has become the first choice of Warner Bros. Pictures to tackle the part of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern.

Jordan is the second generation test pilot who becomes a superhero after receiving a power ring from Abin Sur. The character has been illustrated as someone who was "utterly honest and born without fear" since the dying Abin Sur specifically used his ring to seek out an individual with that kind of potential to take his place as Green Lantern.

Gosling is known for his works in "The Notebook", "Half Nelson", and "Lars and the Real Girl". His performance as Dan Dunne in "Nelson" has bring him an Academy Award nomination, while his Lars Lindstrom's portrayal in "Lars" gave him a Golden Globe nod.

Green Lantern To Start Shooting In Spring

Donald De Line, producer of the upcoming Green Lantern movie, confirmed that the latest draft of the script turned in by writing team Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green had made the powers that be over at Warner Bros. happy. So happy, in fact, that the movie is being hurled forward, with production gearing up to start as soon as this Spring. Said De Line:

“…it’s coming together and I’m excited about it. Hopefully we’ll make it to start gate. We’re really close - really close.”
